A Peanut Butter And Banana Sandwich Elvis Would Love
The “Elvis” Sandwich
From the moment in the late 1950′s when crooner Elvis Presley announced in an interview his favorite food was a peanut butter and banana sandwich, a new gastronomic trend began. While Elvis may not have considered himself a gastronome, his peanut butter and banana sandwiches became a hit for foodies and lovers of peanut butter. Moms didn’t balk, considering the “Elvis” Sandwich was a way to get their kids to eat fruit instead of candy and gum.
The Legend Continues
Elvis Presley became a singing legend and so did his favorite food. It’s fun to imagine serving Elvis a new millennium version of his peanut butter and banana sandwich. For instance, he might like a few mini-marshmallows added to it. Another version might include tiny semi-sweet chocolate bits. As an adult, Elvis would love a version that includes bananas lightly sauted in butter and dark rum. Although, he would probably serve youngsters a peanut butter and cinnamon-sugared banana sandwich. Kids might add crumbles of chocolate-coated pretzels for a little crunch.
Where There’s Peanut Butter
Peanut butter and banana sandwiches could stand a little uptake by simply rolling bananas in grape, strawberry or orange marmalade before adding to two slices of toasted cinnamon raisin bread. Elvis wouldn’t have been offended if the bread was regular white, raisin, wheat or French bread or pound cake sliced thinly.
For Cream Cheese Lovers
Not to be outdone by jelly, when it comes to peanut butter and banana sandwiches, add color by slathering one slice of bread with your favorite cream cheese before adding bananas. Make a peanut butter and banana cream cheese club sandwich by simply adding a third slice of bread.
For Dessert
Between slices of pound or marble cake, add peanut butter, vanilla ice cream and bananas. Very cool!
